What path did you take to becoming a physical therapist?
I grew up playing competitive sports in high school, and continued my passion for athletes and exercise in undergrad. I obtained my B.A. in health fitness from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN. Along the way, my passions for exercise and interaction with others led me to pursue physical therapy, which offers the best of both worlds. I completed my Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree at the Mayo School of Health Sciences in May of 2011.
What’s your approach to developing a plan of treatment for each individual patient?
I really emphasize seeking the patient’s input into developing a treatment plan and goals for therapy. I’ve found combining direct patient involvement with my clinical guidance allows us to work toward consistent, positive outcomes together. I feel it’s important to offer safe, effective treatments that will meet each patient’s needs on an individual basis.
Have you ever needed physical therapy yourself?
Through all my years of playing competitive sports, I have been fortunate enough to avoid the injuries that would require the services of a physical therapist. I would not hesitate to seek out physical therapy if needed, as I feel our profession as a whole does a great job of promoting meaningful, evidence-based care.
What do you enjoy the most about being a physical therapist?
Building relationships with patients and playing an active role in their rehabilitation. Working and learning together makes each visit a very enjoyable experience.
What’s the key to choosing a physical therapist and why would you recommend that someone choose you for his or her PT?
If I were to choose a physical therapist, I would definitely want one that I feel a certain level of comfort with and is looking out for my best interests as a patient. I have been told by my peers that I have a unique ability to make people feel comfortable. In physical therapy, this allows for positive working relationships with patients which facilitates desirable outcomes. Also, I take pride in taking the time to listen and put forth a genuine interest in each patient’s concerns.
Is there anything else that you would like a patient to know about you?
I grew up on a farm in southeast Minnesota with my parents and three sisters. My wife, Carlie, and I recently moved to Corvallis in July of 2011. I will also be working as a staff physical therapist with OSU Student Health Services. I am excited to start my career in this supportive, welcoming community. If you see either of us around town, please feel free to say “hello” as we love meeting new people.
